Photoderm,  Laser

Intense pulses of light (photoderm, lasers) are also used in treatment of small varicose veins. Light energy of 20-50 joules is transmitted for 0.003 seconds [NOTE: or convert this to "3 milliseconds"?]. Powerful photon particles pass through relatively light-colored skin, are absorbed by darker-colored vessels, and are converted to heat. High temperatures of 190-200 F are achieved for 1-2 milliseconds in these darker colored unwanted veins and cause degeneration in the vein walls. Treated veins are eliminated by resorptions (similar to sclerotherapy) over a period of 2-12 weeks.

Darker skin colors are unsuitable for all kinds of phototherapy. Suntanning, solariums and darkening lotions or medications should be avoided if any kind of light therapy is contemplated.

Therapy usually takes 30-40 minutes, and patients may resume their normal activities right after the sessions.
