This technique is utilized in abolishing varicose veins of 1mm and smaller. A very thin needle (0.015 in) is introduced into the vein and minute amounts of sclerosing agents are injected. Injections are done under high magnifications ( 3.5x to 10x). The injected material consists of concentrated chemically pure salts (e.g. 25% NaCl). These concentrated solutions cause osmotic injury on the inner linings (endothelium) of the vessels. The leg is bandaged with elastic bandages for 24 hrs. to facilitate empty closure. Treated varicose veins are then resorbed over a period of time (2-12 weeks). Occasionally, bruise-like spots may occur around some injection sites. This is due to leakage of small amounts of blood from the needle puncture of the varicose veins. One session of sclerotherapy takes about 20-30 minutes. The number of sessions depends upon the amount of varicose veins. Therapy usually consists of one group of sessions done over 1-4 days. Patients may resume daily activities right after the sessions.
